THE TESTIMONY OF GOOD DEEDS

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16

One day, there was confusion in a prayer group that I was a part of. It happened like this: Our leaders passed a resolution that if one of us faced financial difficulties or life challenges, those of us in the group who were financially able should help others because some members had significant financial capacity. And indeed, they started helping—some were assisted with rent, others with school fees for their children, and even some had houses built for them. However, they started to complain saying, “We don’t want help because when we are helped, people talk about us.” It was a very serious matter. But I stood up and said, "Those who receive help should be the first to testify and should not feel bad if people know that they were given something for free."

Now, It’s is not right for someone to help another person and then go around announcing, 'I helped so-and-so.'" But if you have been helped by someone, it is your responsibility to testify of the good that has been done to you, so that others may be strengthened in faith and learn to give. When you testify and show gratitude, you encourage the person who helped you, and also, "those good deeds of ours that are meant to shine before others are known in this way." Because, If you remain silent, who will know?

People need to know that there are loving and generous individuals ready and willing to help those in need because Jesus Christ lives in them. "Do not sit quietly while the person who helped you is being spoken ill of, and you say nothing. It’s not right." And if someone has helped you, don’t become proud as if you did the thing yourself. Sometimes, you might find someone saying, “It was only God who helped me; it was just a miracle; I can’t even explain it.” Let’s not do that! Yes, it was God, but through someone—mention their name.

When we love and honour each other, God blesses us all, and people come to know God through us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I ask You to give me Your humility and love. I pray for a heart of gratitude and humility. Amen.
