HOW TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT
"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14 NIV"
Walking in the Spirit means living under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to direct your thoughts, actions, and decisions according to God’s will. The Bible encourages believers to walk in the Spirit so they can overcome sinful desires, bear spiritual fruit, and live a life that pleases God.
Here’s how you can walk in the Spirit:
1. Surrender to the Holy Spirit
The first step in walking in the Spirit is surrendering to Him. This means that you cannot live a godly life in your own strength. You must fully depend on the Holy Spirit’s power. The Bible says "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." – Romans 8:14 When you allow the Spirit to lead you, you will experience His guidance, wisdom, and strength.
2. Live According to God’s Word
Once you surrender to the Holy Spirit, how do you practically follow Him? One of the key ways is by aligning your life with Scripture. The Holy Spirit always aligns with God’s Word, and to walk in the Spirit, you must immerse yourself in the Bible. As it is written "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105 The Spirit helps you understand and apply God’s truth, enabling you to walk in righteousness.
3. Cultivate a Life of Prayer
Prayer is essential in walking in the Spirit. Through prayer, we commune with God, seek His guidance, and receive His strength. "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints." – Ephesians 6:18 A prayerful life keeps us connected to God and sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.
4. Bear the Fruit of the Spirit
A person walking in the Spirit exhibits godly character, known as the fruit of the Spirit. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." – Galatians 5:22-23 When we allow the Spirit to transform us, our lives reflect His nature.
5. Resist the Desires of the Flesh
The flesh and the Spirit are in constant opposition. To walk in the Spirit, we must deny our sinful desires and submit to God’s will. "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." – Galatians 5:16 This means making conscious decisions to reject temptation and live a holy life.
6. Be Led by the Spirit Daily
Walking in the Spirit is a daily practice. It requires continual dependence on God rather than relying on our own understanding. The word of God says "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." – Proverbs 3:5-6 Seeking the Spirit’s guidance in our daily decisions ensures we stay in God’s will.
The Holy Spirit speaks to believers through His inner promptings. Obedience to these promptings is key to walking in the Spirit. Walking in the Spirit is not a one-time event but a continuous journey of surrender, obedience, and spiritual growth. By praying, reading God’s Word, resisting sin, bearing fruit, and following the Spirit’s leading, you can experience a victorious Christian life.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, I Surrender my life to you I can not follow you by my own strength please help me to obey you and follow your guidance and wisdom.
