DANGERS OF ENTERING INTO AGREEMENTS WITHOUT SEEKING GOD’S GUIDANCE
Galatians 3:15 (NKJV) says, “Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.”
This verse highlights the seriousness of covenants and agreements in our lives. Once a covenant is made, it becomes binding and cannot be easily changed. This principle applies to both God’s promises and agreements between people. Many individuals face serious challenges because they rush into agreements without seeking God’s counsel. Some of the dangers include:
1. Agreements Can Lead to Bondage
One major danger of making agreements without God’s guidance is that they can result in spiritual, financial, or emotional bondage. In Joshua 9:14-15, the Israelites made a peace treaty with the Gibeonites without asking God whether it was the right decision. Later, they discovered they had been deceived, but they could not break the covenant. This teaches us that failing to seek God’s counsel can lead to bad decisions with long-term consequences.
2. The Risk of Unequal Yoking
The Bible warns against partnering with people who do not share our values. 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NKJV) states, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” Many people enter business partnerships, marriages, or contracts that contradict their faith, only to regret it later and struggle to break free from those agreements. Seeking God’s guidance helps us avoid such dangerous partnerships.
3. Financial Loss and Legal Troubles
The book of Proverbs 6:1-5 warns against guaranteeing debts for others without wisdom. Many have entered into agreements that led to financial ruin because they did not pray or seek godly counsel first. Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not rely on our own understanding.
4. Damaging Integrity and Losing Trust
Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 teaches that it is better not to make a vow than to make one and fail to fulfill it. Careless agreements can destroy a person’s integrity and credibility. Psalm 15:4 praises the righteous person who keeps their promises even when it costs them. Seeking God’s guidance before making commitments ensures that we do not enter into agreements we will later regret or fail to honor.
Before making any agreement, whether in business, marriage, or any other area, it is crucial to seek God’s guidance. Through prayer, His Word, and counsel from godly people, we can avoid costly mistakes and ensure that our decisions align with His will.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I ask for Your wisdom in every agreement I make. Help me to rely on Your guidance and not on my own understanding. In Jesus Name, Amen.
