THE BENEFITS OF BEING A GOOD LISTENER

Proverbs 18:13 AMP says, "He who answers before he hears [the facts]— It is folly and shame to him."

This scripture teaches that it is foolish to respond before listening carefully. If you are quick to give your opinion without fully understanding a matter, it shows ignorance rather than wisdom. Listening first gives you a chance to grasp the reality of the situation and respond wisely.

Being a good listener is more valuable than being a talker. A person who talks too much without listening to others lacks knowledge and makes many mistakes. The Bible says, "A fool's wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame." (Proverbs 12:16). When you restrain yourself from speaking hastily or reacting in anger, you demonstrate wisdom. Anger and harsh words lead to bad responses, but listening patiently helps you answer wisely.

When speaking to someone who has made a mistake, harsh words do not help but instead break their spirit. The Bible says, "A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger." (Proverbs 15:1). If you speak harshly, the person may feel discouraged and defensive rather than being open to correction. But if you speak gently, they are more likely to recognize their mistake and learn from it. Listening carefully before speaking helps you choose the right words to say.

Another important point is that not every situation requires your opinion. Some matters should be handled in silence and prayer rather than discussion or argument. "He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit." (Proverbs 17:27). Learning to remain silent helps you avoid unnecessary conflicts. Unnecessary words can cause division, but by being calm and a good listener, you will maintain peace.

Today, make a decision to be a good listener because listening leads to wisdom, prevents mistakes, and helps build good relationships with others. Listen attentively, avoid speaking too quickly, and ensure that your words are wise and uplifting.

Prayer: O God of wisdom, teach me to be a good listener and to be humble. Give me a patient heart so that I may speak wisely and control my anger. Guide me to use my words with wisdom and to bring peace to others. Amen.
