GET WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING
Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
This verse is a divine call to prioritize wisdom and understanding above everything else in life. It does not say "get a degree first," or "make money first"—but instead, "get wisdom." That tells us something powerful: the wisdom and understanding that come from God are more valuable than any earthly qualifications, possessions, or achievements.
Wisdom here does not refer to mere human intelligence or experience. It is the wisdom of God—the ability to see life from God’s point of view and to act accordingly. Understanding, in this context, is the ability to discern truth, to walk rightly, and to apply wisdom in everyday decisions. You may have all the academic degrees, but without God's wisdom and understanding, you will still make poor decisions, live in confusion, or fall into destruction.
The Amplified Bible Version says it this way “The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skillful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]! And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].” (Proverbs 4:7, AMP)
This version expands the meaning and makes it clearer, it emphasizes “skillful and godly” wisdom—not just any wisdom. It’s the kind that teaches you how to live in alignment with God’s will. It is “preeminent,” meaning it must come first in your life. Also, understanding is defined as “spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation.” This means when you walk with God’s understanding, you are not easily deceived, you are spiritually mature, and you are able to interpret things wisely and calmly.
When you seek this kind of wisdom, you start making choices that lead to peace, success, and spiritual growth. Without it, you are likely to build your life on shaky ground, even if it looks impressive to the world. Therefore, pursue the wisdom of God above all. Let it guide your relationships, business, education, and calling. It is the principal thing.
Prayer: Lord, give me Your wisdom and divine understanding, so I may walk in truth, light, purpose, and lasting peace. Amen.
