PEACE LIKE A RIVER

“Oh, that you had heeded My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river…” (Isaiah 48:18, NKJV).

This cry from God's heart reveals a deep truth—peace is the reward of obedience. When we choose to follow God's commands, we walk in a path designed for our protection, joy, and well-being. Just as a river flows smoothly when undisturbed, so does our peace when we remain in God’s will. Disobedience is like stepping off a safe path into danger; it invites trouble, confusion, and pain. But when we follow God’s Word, He shields us from what could have destroyed our peace.

God’s commandments are not restrictions meant to burden us—they are guardrails that keep us from harm. Like a parent warning a child not to touch fire, God gives His instructions to save us from unnecessary wounds. Many troubles we face in life come from ignoring His voice. The loss of peace in our hearts, homes, and communities is often the result of people doing wrong things—lying, stealing, hating, or walking in pride. These actions open the door for fear, conflict, and anxiety.

On the other hand, when we obey, we align ourselves with God’s design. We become like trees planted by the river—strong, peaceful, and fruitful. We find that even in storms, His peace guards our hearts. This is because the source of all true peace is God Himself. No amount of money, success, or worldly comfort can give lasting peace. That is why Jesus is called the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He came to restore what sin had broken—to bring peace between God and man, and peace within every heart that believes in Him.

When we receive Jesus and live according to His teaching, peace flows like a river in our souls. It is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God that brings this peace. Let us, therefore, love God's Word, walk in His ways, and trust the One who leads us gently, like a shepherd beside still waters.

Prayer: Lord, help me to obey You daily. Let Your peace flow in my life like a river, calm and strong. Amen.
