SILENCE IS WISDOM

James 1:19 (NKJV) says, "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."

This verse gives us a clear instruction—listen carefully, speak slowly, and avoid anger. Many people overlook how powerful the tongue is. It is a small part of the body, but if not controlled, it can cause great damage. Words once spoken cannot be taken back. That’s why silence, at the right time, is wisdom.

In the following verse, James explains that the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Most of the time, anger pushes people to speak harsh, harmful, or careless words. These words often lead to broken relationships, lost opportunities, and deep regrets. There is a close connection between your heart and your mouth. Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). If your heart is not right—full of bitterness, pride, or impatience—your tongue will eventually reveal it.

That is why it’s important to guard your emotions and not let feelings lead your speech. Many people have lost their jobs because of what they said. Others have ruined their marriages. Some have lost the trust of friends and family. All because they couldn’t shut their mouth. If you want to succeed in any area of your life, you must learn to control what you say.

Don’t be quick to speak. Don’t be quick to judge. Social media has given everyone a voice, but not everyone uses it wisely. Today, people feel free to comment on any subject, respond to anyone—even leaders—with disrespect. This behavior is dangerous and dishonorable. It shows a lack of wisdom.

Wisdom is shown not just in speaking right, but often in staying silent. If you don’t fully understand something, don’t talk about it. Don’t spread rumors. Don’t try to win every argument. Don’t try to prove you are right all the time. Be wise. Silence is wisdom.
