DELIVER US FROM EVIL

Luke 11:4 (KJV) says, “And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”

The word “evil” means anything bad, harmful, painful, wicked, or full of destruction. In this verse, Jesus teaches us to pray that God will keep us away from temptations and also rescue us from every form of evil.

Sometimes, we are not led into evil by God, but we walk into it ourselves. Our choices, emotions, or weakness may open doors to destruction. That is why this prayer is so important—to ask God for protection from what we cannot see coming.

Some Bible versions say “deliver us from the evil one,” meaning Satan. This is true, but King James Version uses the word “evil” which goes beyond Satan himself. Satan may trick you into doing something that will keep hurting you even when he is no longer around.

Look at Adam and Eve. When the devil made them eat the forbidden fruit, he disappeared, but they remained with the curse and pain. Death came in, and that evil has stayed with all people till today. That is the power of evil—it causes lasting damage.

Evil also appears as bad luck or misfortune. You may find yourself in deep trouble for something you never planned. For example, a man was driving, and he helped a young man carrying a bag. The man was kind, but the young man ran away at a police checkpoint, leaving the bag in the car. Inside the bag were drugs. The innocent driver was arrested and charged with a crime he didn’t commit.

That’s why we must pray daily, “Deliver us from evil.” Whether it’s the devil, a trap, or a hidden danger, only God can keep us safe.

Prayer: Lord, deliver me from evil and protect me from traps I do not see coming.
