OVERCOMING SPIRITUAL DEATH 2: Win the Battle with your Flesh
Galatians 5:16 (NKJV) states: “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
This verse gives us the key to overcoming spiritual death—walking in the Spirit. It reminds us that our victory over sin and the desires of the flesh is not found in human strength but through a Spirit-led life.
The Bible is clear in Romans 8:13: “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” The death spoken of here is first spiritual death, separation from God, which eventually leads to physical death. This death is a direct result of yielding to the flesh instead of living in the Spirit.
Living by the flesh means obeying the desires of the body without considering God’s wisdom. It means sinking into worldly pleasures, pursuing temporary satisfaction while ignoring eternal consequences. If you don’t know what it means to live after the flesh, Galatians 5:19–21 lists the works of the flesh which are: “Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like”. These acts drain the spirit and separate us from God, the true source of life.
Our world often glorifies the idea of “following your heart” or “doing what makes you happy.” Yet, these popular sayings are worldly wisdom contrary to God’s Word. Social media, TV, and movies push people to chase wealth, fame, and pleasure, but those who indulge only discover emptiness. Life’s true purpose is not wearing expensive clothes, luxury cars, or status—it is to serve, solve problems, help the needy, and most importantly, lead others to know God through our lives.
The Bible warns us: “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other.” (Galatians 5:16–18). This battle is real, but victory is possible through God’s Spirit. Romans 8:11 assures us: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He… will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
Today, decide to walk by the Spirit. It will not always be easy, but God’s grace and His Spirit empower you to overcome the flesh and live in true freedom.
Prayer: Lord, give me strength through Your Spirit to overcome the flesh and live a life that pleases You. Amen.
