OVERCOMING SPIRITUAL DEATH: Cultivating Spiritual Desires

Psalms 42:2 NKJV says; My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Spiritual death is not physical; it is the separation of man from God due to sin. When sin dominates a person’s life, their sensitivity to God’s voice, presence, and guidance becomes dull. Yet, through Christ, we are offered the gift of life—eternal, abundant, and spiritual.

Spiritual death occurs when desires of the flesh replace the desire for God. It begins subtly—prayer becomes a burden, the Word of God feels dry, and worldly pursuits take priority. The enemy thrives in this state, keeping a person away from their true identity and inheritance in Christ. However, God calls us to rise above this state and embrace spiritual life by cultivating holy desires.

To overcome spiritual death, we must first acknowledge our need for God. David prayed in Psalm 51:10 NKJV, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Renewal starts with a sincere heart that longs for restoration. Spiritual desires are birthed when we hunger for God’s presence more than the pleasures of the world.

Secondly, we must feed our spirit daily. Just as the body requires food, the spirit thrives on prayer, worship, fasting, and consistent study of God’s Word. Jesus said in Matthew 4:4 NKJV, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Spiritual life cannot grow without divine nourishment.

Lastly, we need to walk in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit leads us away from sin and into a life of righteousness. Galatians 5:16 NKJV reminds us: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” By following His guidance, spiritual desires flourish and the life of God manifests in us.

Today, God calls us to rise from spiritual deadness and pursue Him with passion. As we cultivate holy desires, we experience His presence, power, and purpose like never before.

Prayer: Lord, revive my spirit and fill me with holy  desires for you daily
