LOVING ONE ANOTHER

 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” Philippians 2:3

Apostle Paul gives a powerful instruction about the attitude that should govern the life of every believer. This verse addresses the inner motivation behind human actions and calls Christians to reject pride and selfish ambition. Paul teaches that the Christian life is not only about what we do, but also about the spirit in which we do it.

The verse begins with a clear command: “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit.” Selfish ambition refers to actions driven by personal gain, rivalry, or the desire to elevate oneself above others. It is the mentality that seeks recognition, position, or praise. Conceit, on the other hand, is empty pride. It is the exaggerated belief that one is more important, more capable, or more deserving than others. Paul warns believers that nothing in the Christian life should be motivated by such attitudes.

This warning is very important because selfish ambition destroys unity among believers. When people compete for recognition or status, relationships are damaged and the community of faith becomes divided. The church was never designed to function through rivalry. Instead, it is meant to operate through love, humility, and service.

Paul then presents the opposite attitude: “but in lowliness of mind.” Lowliness of mind means humility. It is the recognition that everything we have and everything we are comes from God. A humble person does not think of himself as the center of everything. Instead, he understands his dependence on God's grace.

Humility is not weakness or self-hatred. Rather, it is a correct understanding of oneself before God. The humble person acknowledges his limitations while appreciating the value and dignity of others.

Paul continues with a radical instruction: “let each esteem others better than himself.” This does not mean that a person should deny his gifts or abilities. Instead, it means choosing to value others highly and to consider their needs and interests seriously. It is an intentional decision to treat others with honor and respect.

This teaching reflects the character of Jesus Christ, who is presented in the following verses of the chapter as the ultimate example of humility. Though He was divine, Christ humbled Himself and took the form of a servant for the sake of humanity.

Therefore, Philippians 2:3 calls believers to a life that rejects pride and embraces humility. It teaches that true Christian maturity is demonstrated not by self-promotion, but by the willingness to honor others and serve them with a humble heart.

Prayer: Lord, remove pride from my heart and teach me to walk in humility and love.
