WHAT IT MEANS TO HATE EVIL
Psalm 97:10 (GNT) says, “The Lord loves those who hate evil; he protects the lives of his people; he rescues them from the power of the wicked.”
This verse reveals an important truth about God and His people. God loves those who hate evil. To hate evil does not mean hating people. It means rejecting sin, refusing wickedness, and standing firmly for what is right. When a person chooses to hate evil, God promises protection and deliverance from the power of the wicked.
There was a church in the Book of Revelation that was rebuked and given a strong warning by Jesus. Revelation 2:20 (GNT) says: “But this is what I have against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a messenger of God. By her teaching she misleads my servants into practicing sexual immorality and eating food that has been offered to idols.”
The problem of the church in Thyatira was that it did not hate evil. They tolerated evil and did nothing about it. Though they did not support it or practice it themselves, it was happening in their presence and they took no action to stop it.
As a result, Jesus gave them a strong warning and called them to repent, otherwise judgment would come upon them.
Now, this is also the problem with many modern Christians and with the church as a whole today. Many Christians do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings. They do not want to offend anyone, no matter what people do. Because of this, we have become tolerant of evil. We want to get along with everyone and be seen as good by all people.
Because of this attitude, the church has begun to lose its moral authority to rebuke evil. Many Christians have also lost that authority even in their own homes.
Now let us look again at the Word of God. Psalm 97:10 says, “The Lord loves those who hate evil.” When you stand up for what is right and rebuke sin and evil, some people will hate you but God will love you, because that is what His Word says.
Then it says, “He protects the lives of his people.” This means that if you hate evil and refuse to tolerate it, God will protect you. Many of us have lost God’s protection because we have tolerated evil. And that same evil, those same sins, have entered our homes and our lives. Some of them are even consuming our children.
Then the verse says, “He rescues them from the power of the wicked.” If you stand up for truth and rebuke sin and evil, those who do evil may attack you. But God will rescue you from their power. Their schemes and plans will not succeed against you.
Now ask yourself these questions:
Do you truly hate evil? Do you hate sin, or do you tolerate it? Are you watching it on your phone? Are you listening to it on the radio, television, or through your headphones? Do you tolerate friends who practice evil, like the church of Thyatira did? Is evil being done in your home, your business, or in any place that is under your authority?
Repent, and ask God for the strength and power to reject evil, rebuke sin, and truly hate what is evil.
Prayer: Lord, give me courage to hate evil and stand firmly for righteousness.
